"My Magic Rainbow's up there somewhere ~ I'll find it given time ~ and when I do a poet will find the perfect rhyme…………"

Roary sang along with his favorite song as he greeted another day,

"….and the dreamer said his rainbow would shine across the seas ~ giving hope to everyone who ever dared to dream a dream".

It was not unusual for Roary's mother to find him singing and starring up at the sky as he searched for answers. With big, wide eyes, he looked at his mother and asked, "why am I bigger than my Angel and Fairy friends"? "They don't have long white fur, and they are not always daydreaming about doing impossible things."

"Roary, no matter how big you grow, you will always be my little dreamer," said his mother as she gave him a hug. She tried to make him feel better by adding, "Somewhere out there you will find the magic that will help erase all the pain and all the sadness in the whole wide world. I am sure you will find a happy ending to every story ever told."

"But how can I make my dreams come true? I don't have wings and can't fly down to earth like my Angel and Fairy friends. How can I help others if all I can do is hang around this cold northern sky and dream?" "Keep dreaming Roary. Your dreams will come true when you become a part of someone else's dream," his mother whispered softly. Roary always felt better after talking with his Mother. He gave her a kiss and went out to play with his little friends who loved him, and never questioned his unusual appearance.

Roary quickly found his favorite place to sit outside. Although it was cold and dark this time of year, the northern sky was bright with light from the moon. Roary liked to stare up at it and imagine it had magical powers that could help people.

As he waited for his little friends to join him, he wondered how he could make the world a better place. The Angels arrived first and sat down beside him. Roary asked them the same question he had asked his mother ~ "Why am I so different?" The Angels just looked up at Roary and smiled. They loved Roary and wanted to make him feel better, so they began to stroke his soft white fur.

As the Angels petted him, a low, soft sound came from deep within Roary that sounded like the purr of a kitten. Roary enjoyed the attention he was getting from the Angels and the more they petted, the louder his purr became. Soon the little Fairies who had been playing nearby heard this soothing noise and ran to see what it was. When they realized it was their good friend Roary making this sound, they squealed with delight and began to dance around! As the Fairies formed a circle and danced, their wings touched and created a colorful, twinkling glow around their moving bodies.

Roary's purring was like music to their ears, so the Angels kept petting and the Fairies danced faster and faster while watching the beautiful light show they were creating.

They were so busy dancing and petting that they did not realize a storm was approaching. Suddenly, a big, cold rainstorm blew in from the North. There was no time for the Fairies and Angels to run for cover! "Oh, No, what should we do?" they cried. Quickly, Roary jumped to his feet and yelled, "Come to me! I will shelter you and keep you warm." All of the Fairies and Angels ran to Roary as his big body towered over them and his long white fur wrapped around them. He was so much bigger that he could easily shelter all of them and protect them from the cold wind and rain. When they were all tucked in safely, Roary ducked his own head down into his fur to protect it from the wind and rain.

Soon, the storm passed and all of the Angels and Fairies ran out from the cover of Roary's fur. They were safe, dry and so happy that their friend was different!

All of the Angels and Fairies decided that Roary, their big, tall, furry friend, would be their guardian forever! They all began dancing and twinkling with joy! As the Angels and the Fairies danced, their twinkling glow made a light that bounced off some of the remaining raindrops. Like magic, a beautiful rainbow appeared. Just like in his favorite song, "it had no end and no beginning - it rose above the trees. It glistened off the mountaintops and purified the streams."

As Roary stared at the colorful arches in the sky, he imagined the rainbow to have magical powers. Each color would help heal some of the sadness on earth. Red would bring love, blue would offer hope, yellow would spread peace, and green would be charity for all of those in need.

Roary looked at the Angels and they smiled. Without saying a word, he jumped on the rainbow and slid all the very down to earth! The Angels and Fairies followed Roary and laughed and played all the way down the Magic Rainbow.

The Angels and Fairies had been to earth many times before, but this was Roary's first visit. Roary asked his friends to show him around and especially to take him to places that might need his help. They remembered that on their last visit they had seen a vast area of land that had been destroyed by wild fires. The earth was brown and the once tall trees were only charred stumps. Many streams were polluted, and some of the animals had been killed or injured. Maybe Roary could help.

When they arrived, they were pleasantly surprised to see people working with seedlings and shovels to begin making the earth green again. Roary thought, "these must be the believers, the sowers and reapers, and the dreamers who never give up."

One of the Angels looked up on the hill and spotted two old friends. She said to Roary, "come with me, I want you to meet someone even bigger than you"! As they climbed the hill, they heard the Buffalo say "Won't Mother's Garden look good when the earth becomes green again and the rivers all run clean again? When the trees in the forest reach for the sky there will be hope for us all, the big and the small, and a place for the Eagle to fly!"

Standing nearby was the buffalo's friend ~ a crippled old Eagle wearing a raincoat to cover his shattered wing and a hat to hide one eye. As he watched the workers with hope in his heart, the Eagle said, "They can make a difference, every man, woman, and child. I know they will show us that this generation has answered the call of the wild! There will be a place for me to fly!"

Roary immediately felt a connection to the big Buffalo and the crippled, old Eagle. Maybe because they were different, or maybe because they were dreamers too. Roary and his friends began planting flowers to help the other workers. As Roary planted and saw the beautiful colors, they reminded him of the Magic Rainbow.

"OH NO!" Roary yelled! "How will I get home"! It had just occurred to Roary that he could not climb back up the Magic Rainbow and he did not have wings. He knew he would have to make a new home right here on Earth.

At first, Roary was frightened. Then, after talking to his Angel and Fairy friends, he realized that living on earth would give him a chance to make all of his dreams come true. He could share his dreams with the young and with the old, beginning with his new friends, the Buffalo and the Eagle.

Roary waved goodbye to his Angel and Fairy friends as they fluttered their wings and began their trip back home to the northern sky. Roary sent a message to his mother that he was happy and that he would always be a dreamer because now he could finally become a part of someone else's dream.

Roary is happy living down on earth, but sometimes misses his mother and good friends who are far away in the northern sky. Every night he looks up at the moon and begins to purr. On special nights when Roary feels his Angel and Fairy friends pulling at his heart strings, his purr becomes a loud roar ~ so loud that the Angels and Fairies hear him and begin to twinkle and dance.

On a clear night down on Earth, men, women and children come out of their homes to watch a spectacular light show in the northern sky ~ they call it the Northern Lights.
